South Tyneside is based in the heart of North East England, between the major cities of Newcastle upon Tyne and Sunderland. Our location on the mouth of the River Tyne enables access to Europe across the North Sea - the shortest sea crossing from the north of the UK.

By air - from Newcastle International Airport

  • London airports - 40 minute flight
  • Amsterdam Schipol - 1 hour 20 minute flight

Newcastle International Airport carries around 4.6 million passengers per year to over 74 direct destinations across the world. 

By rail - from Newcastle Central Station 

  • London Kings Cross - 2 hour 36 minutes (every 30 minutes)
  • Paris - 6 hour 20 minutes 

Recent £20million regeneration of Central Station and a £500million investment from new operator TransPennine Express including direct trains to Manchester Airport. 

By sea - via Port of Tyne

  • Exports to Europe and globally including over 600,000 vehicles per year
  • A "one stop" logistics operation for import and export including containers, warehousing and distribution 
  • A record number of 42 cruise ships calling at the International Passenger Terminal in 2016, including Disney 

Local transport networks  

  • The A19 and A1 link the area to other key business locations across the region, and the country

Broadband‚Äč

  • In 2013 OFCOM's fixed broadband data ranked South Tyneside 1 on a scale of 1 to 5 (with one being the highest/ fastest) based on how it scored on four broadband metrics
  • In 2013 OFCOM reported that South Tyneside had superfast availability of 90.9% and it was ranked in the top 15% of all UK Local Authority areas (Point Topic 2012)
  • South Tyneside has a contract in place to roll-out superfast broadband to 99.15% of the Borough by 2018, making it one of the best connected areas in the UK
